- On rock outcrops (especially limestone and calcareous sandstone, but also more acidic rocks) in the mountains; on hardwood bark in the outer Piedmont and Coastal Plain. Widely distributed in the Ridge and Valley region of the mountains, but infrequent to rare eastward and collections entirely lacking from most of the Piedmont.
