Native of Japan, reported as an escape in at least 16 eastern states (Kartesz 2014). Frequently planted in wildlife food plots by federal and state agencies, and emerging as an invasive pest in the Mid-Atlantic states, especially Maryland. As aptly noted by Alan Weakley (Flora of the Southeastern U.S.): "why wildlife species in our area need more oak trees is somewhat mystifying!"
Habitat
Escaping (sometimes invasively) in several urban parks and natural areas in northern Virginia. More widely distributed as a planted tree.
Native Status
Introduced
