This var. of W. frutescens is native to the Midwest, but much cultivated east of its natural range and established as an escape. Perhaps better treated as a distinct species, W. macrostachya.
Habitat
Disturbed forests, fencerows, and around old homesites; mostly in weedy situations. Infrequent throughout, but may be invasive where found.
