- Collected from a large outcrop on the north slope of Whitetop Mountain at 1585 m elevation. Since its identity was not confirmed until later, the population extent could not be assessed but suitable outcrops are abundant on the mountain. The species is mostly restricted to the North Carolina mountains with a few collections from extreme eastern Tennessee and northern Georgia (Consortium of Bryophyte Herbaria 2023, Anderson 1987).
- Habitat
- Vertical, north-facing outcrop surrounded by forest of Picea rubens, Betula alleghaniensis and other hardwoods. Bryophyte associates include Tritomaria exsecta, Marsupella emarginta, Pylaisiadelpha tenuirostris, Syzigiella autumnalis, Scapania nemorea Radula sp., Sphagnum cf. capillifolium.
