Comments
This species has generally been lumped with E. corollata or treated as a var. of it in previous Virginia botanical studies, but many Virginia herbarium specimens were annotated by Michael J. Huft of the University of Michigan. Overall, this species has a more southern range than E. corollata. The two species are sympatric in our area (especially in the southern half of the state) and very similar; most of the distinguishing characters have overlapping ranges, and specimens of equivocal identity are not uncommon. Additional field and herbarium studies are needed.
Habitat
Dry forests, woodlands, and clearings. The distribution and status of this species are incompletely known because it has often been included in Euphorbia corollata. However, based on numerous confirmed herbarium specimens, it appears to have a wide distribution in the state, and is especially common in the southern Piedmont.
Native Status
Native
