- High-elevation forests, bogs, and seepage swamps. Infrequent in the mountains, but locally common at the highest elevations; dominates in nearly pure stands on Allegheny and Jack mountains (Highland Co.), Clinch Mountain (Tazewell and Russell counties), and the Balsam Mountains of the Southern Blue Ridge (Grayson, Smyth, and Washington counties).
