- Comments
- Two varieties occur in Virginia: var. baileyana (Munson) Comeaux and var. floridana Munson. Weakley has elevated these taxa to species status (see Synonymy) in his 2023 Flora of the Southeastern U.S. However, we have retained the traditional varietal treatment because the two are similar, diagnostic characters are gradational, and individual plants are sometimes difficult to distinguish in our area. Many herbarium specimens have not been determined to variety; therefore a map of the species distribution has been retained. See varietal maps for confirmed records of var. baileyana and var. floridana.
