There is considerable evidence that in recent decades populations of this species have increased in the mountains and spread eastward into the Piedmont.
Habitat
Well-drained floodplain forests and mesic to dry-mesic upland forests; usually in base-rich soils. Infrequent to locally common in the mountains and n. and inner Piedmont; rare in the extreme inner n. Coastal Plain.
