Comments
This species has a wide range across northern North America. Fassett recognized four intergrading varieties or races based on variation in rhizome internode lengths and density of leaf-margin ciliation. However, his proposed segregates are old (1935), and FNA does not recognize them. The genus is in need of modern phylogenetic study.
Habitat
High-elevation forests, especially red spruce forests and northern hardwood forests, seepage swamps, boulder fields with periodic seepage; less commonly in Northern Red Oak forests and occasionally in rich mesic forests at lower elevations. Infrequent in the mountains, primarily at higher elevations.
Native Status
Native
