This species was subsumed in Carex rosea in Atlas III and is far more widespread in Virginia than the current map indicates, especially in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont. The similar C. socialis should be sought in river floodplain habitats in se and sc Va, recognizable by its even narrower perigynia and wide-spreading rhizomes.
Floodplain forests, alluvial swamps, seepage swamps, depression swamps and ponds, maritime swamps, mesic to, less often, dry-mesic upland forests, and various moist to wet, disturbed, usually shaded habitats. Frequent throughout.
