Var. billingsii O.W. Knight is a smaller, more northern variant of the species that is reduced to synonymy by the Flora of North America (Vol. 23). If recognized (as by the Flora of Virginia), our plants would be var. trisperma.
Habitat
Bogs, seeps, seepage swamps, and beaver meadows at high elevations; usually grows in shaded Sphagnum. Infrequent and local in the mountains, mostly above 1070 m (3500 ft) elevation, but may be common in favorable localities.
