This Cyperus is distinguished by its annual habit, small size, and floral scales with recurved awns (also see C. granitophilus). When dry, the plant has the odor of slippery elm.
Habitat
Seasonally exposed, sandy, silty, and muddy river shores and bars; impoundment and reservoir shores; thin soils and crevices on mafic and granitic outcrops; occasionally in barren, ruderal habitats (e.g., pavement cracks, sandy waste ground) that simulate the natural ones. Infrequent and local in the Piedmont and mountains.
