Dry open forests and clearings, sandhill woodlands, Piedmont woodlands influenced by prescribed or incendiary fires; occurs in a considerable range of dry soils, including extremely acidic sandy soils, base-rich soils over mafic rocks, and highly calcareous soils of Coastal Plain shell-marl ravines. Widely distributed but infrequent in the s. and c. Piedmont and s. and c. Coastal Plain.
