Comments
Sorrie (2022, J. Bot. Res. Inst. Texas 16(2): 377-418) clearly established that Fernald's Aster umbellatus var. brevisquamus is not conspecific with D. sericocarpoides, and that bona fide material of the latter does not occur north of south-central North Carolina. Doellingeria umbellata var. pubens (A. Gray) Britt. occurs in moist habitats of the upper Midwest.

Bogs, fens, seeps, seepage swamps, wet meadows and clearings, high-gradient stream margins and bars, and high-elevation meadows and balds; tolerant of a range of soil chemistries. Infrequent but widespread in the mountains and Piedmont; rare in the inner Coastal Plain.
Native Status
Native
