- Two infraspecific taxa, var. dioica and var. orientalis Gleason, are sometimes recognized, based on minor differences in pubescence. According to Weakley (2012 Draft Flora of the Southern and Mid-Atlantic States), it is "unlikely that these are taxonomically meaningful."
