- Comments
- Vars. caroliniana and wherryi (Small) Fernald are found in adjoining states, var. caroliniana to the south and var. wherryi in West Virginia. So far as we know, Virginia plants are all the northeastern var. pensylvanica. Var. wherryi, occurring predominately west of the Appalachians, is attributed to Virginia in FNA (as ssp. wherryi) but the source of this attribution is unknown to us. However, it should be looked for in limestone districts of our westernmost counties.

- Dry rocky or sandy forests, woodlands, barrens, and outcrops; tolerant of a range of soils and rock chemistries. Frequent throughout, except in far sw. Virginia.
