Notably disjunct from the lower Midwest to xerophytic habitats in northwestern and southern Virginia, eastern West Virginia, and western Maryland.
Habitat
Dry shale woodlands, shale barrens, and shaly roadsides; appears limited to areas underlain by calcareous shale or siltstone. Rare in the s. Piedmont (Danville Basin) and nw. mountains (Ridge and Valley province).
