- Comments
- This taxon, with its low stature, stoloniferous habit, and small leaves, is unquestionably distinct at some level. We follow Flora of Virginia and Flora of the Southeastern U.S. in treating it as a distinct species. Although it has been named Morella pumila, Weakley and Poindexter (2023, J. Bot. Res. Inst. Texas 17(1): 191-257) demonstrated that the epithet "pusilla" has priority over "pumila" at species rank.
- Habitat
- Mesic to extremely dry sandy woodlands; mostly, if not entirely, on deep sandhill deposits along the Nottoway and Blackwater rivers. Rare, inner Coastal Plain, south of the James River.
