Recently, this taxon has usually been treated as a var. of Orbexilum pedunculatum, but has now been elevated to species rank. See Vincent (2014, Phytoneuron 2014-36: 1-7) and Egan and Crandall (2008, Molec. Phylog. Evol. 46: 532–546).
Habitat
Woodlands, clearings, and sandy and rocky riversides. Infrequent in the Piedmont and inner Coastal Plain, mostly south of the James River; rare in mountains (James River Gorge in the Blue Ridge Mountains).
