Botanical Name
Betula papyrifera Marshall var. papyrifera
Common Name
Paper Birch
Flora of Virginia Name/Status
in Taxa Not Treated: Incorrectly Reported Taxa (as Betula papyrifera Marshall)
Most Virginia specimens labeled B. papyrifera are alleged to represent var. cordifolia. However, FNA recognizes var. papyrifera as a full species and includes Virginia in the range. Many Virginia trees appear to have "intermediate" characters, and a study is currently underway to re-assess their taxonomic status. See Comments under var. cordifolia about the relationship of the two taxa; and see map under var. cordifolia for the distribution of all records of Betula papyrifera sensu lato in Virginia.
Recent reports of trees with the characteristic cuneate to rounded leaf bases and pubescent twigs of this var. are currently under investigation, along with a re-examination of older herbarium specimens.
