Distinctive for its few leaves (usually 3 or 4) clustered near the base, the spikelets large and approximate in narrow, nodding panicles. A northern species, approaching its southern limits in Virginia.
Habitat
Graminoid-rich, ridge-top oak and oak-hickory forests; shale woodlands and barrens. Rare, wc. mountains; known only from a portion of Shenandoah Mountain in Augusta, Bath, and Highland counties (Ridge and Valley province).
