According to Stotler and Crandall-Stotler's Synopsis of the Liverwort Flora of North America North of Mexico (2017), the name of the Eurasian Calypogeia fissa has been widely misapplied to North American plants. Schuster proposed a varietal name for the latter (C. fissa var. neogaea), but Stotler and Crandall-Stotler follow Bakalin in treating the North American plants as a full species.
