- The map includes records for all three subspecies, which were not recognized in earlier hard-copy editions of the Atlas. However, it is probably representative of the distribution of ssp. triphyllum, which appears to be by far the most numerous and widely distributed subspecies in Virginia. Ssp. triphyllum is tetraploid, and is broadly sympatric with ssp. pusillum, with which it sometimes co-occurs. See also Comments under ssp. pusillum and ssp. stewardsonii.
