Comments
The map is very incomplete and based on specimens labelled or annotated as var. carolinae at 13 southeastern herbaria. However, most specimens of Luzula acuminata at these and other herbaria are not identified to var., and extensive herbarium work is needed. See also the species-level map for L. acuminata.
Habitat
Various mesic forests, clearings, and seepage swamp hummocks in the mountains; eastward it occurs in mesic and dry-mesic forests, often in sheet-eroded soils of bluffs, steep slopes, and stream banks. Based on herbarium data and field observations, plants matching the description of var. carolinae occur primarily in the sw. mountains and eastern Virginia; fairly frequent in east-central and se. Virginia.
