Comments
The southernmost native populations occur on North Fork Mountain in Pendleton County, West Virginia. The species does not occur as a native tree in Virginia but has been planted by the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, sometimes in remote areas, and has reproduced spontaneously in abundance at one site.
Habitat
Escaped from planted trees on Shenandoah Mountain, on the Augusta / Highland Co. line near the headwaters of the North River. Also in Page County.
