- Primarily a species of the lower Midwest and Gulf states, Carex cherokeensis was discovered at the Radford Arsenal (Pulaski Co.) in 1998 by Wieboldt. See Castanea 69:145 (2004) for an interesting discussion about whether this should be considered a native or introduced population. Subsequently discovered in Scott, Albemarle, and Fairfax counties, the latter two suggesting the species is spreading in our region.
- Habitat
- Old road bed in woodland at top of bank along the New River in Pulaski County and near Rye Cove in Scott County; possibly native in these areas. Populations in a disturbed floodplain of the Rivanna River in Albemarle County and in Accotink Creek Stream Valley Park in Fairfax County are almost certainly introduced. Rare, mountains and Piedmont.
