Comments
The related Dichanthelium fusiforme was previously mapped in the atlas but has been removed. It was reported for Virginia by Fernald (Rhodora 1939) based on his specimen, #8065, "Dinwiddie County: dry clearings and borders of woods south of Burgess Station". This specimen was subsequently annotated to D. angustifolium by RJ LeBlond (2012). A Townsend collection from New Kent also proved to be misidentified, leaving no Virginia vouchers.
Habitat
Maritime forests, dune woodlands and scrub, Piedmont hardpan forests, and other sandy, dry, or alternately wet-and-dry forests and clearings; in the Piedmont, it often occurs in wetland ecotones in hard clay soils. This species has been included in Dichanthelium aciculare in most Virginia studies; it appears to be most frequent in the s. Coastal Plain, with scattered occurrences elsewhere in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont, and disjunct to Augusta County in the Ridge and Valley province.
Native Status
Native
