- Taxonomy of the Calystegia sepium complex has been controversial and confusing. Brummitt (Kew Bull. 35:327-334 (1980)) recognized at least four subspecific taxa that could be attributed to Virginia (see synonymy above). Their status and distributions are poorly known, and are only tentatively mapped at present. Those who wish to delve deeper into this complex should consult the Flora of the Southeastern U.S., which is in the process of transferring all Calystegia spp. back into Convolvulus, and also has a key that may be useful. However, several of the combinations in Convolvulus have not been formally published, so we are holding off on evaluating and/or following this change until the work is completed.
- Habitat
- Members of this species complex occur in a wide range of natural and disturbed habitats but have weedy tendencies; they are recorded from mesic upland forests, floodplain forests, stream banks and bars, tidal freshwater and oligohaline marshes, dune grasslands, interdune swales, old fields, cultivated fields, fencerows, disturbed alluvial soil, and other ruderal habitats. Note that it is uncertain whether the alien C. sepium ssp. sepium occurs in Virginia.
