Celtis occidentalis is the most common and widely distributed hackberry in Virginia. It is a northern and midwestern species that becomes considerably less common south of Virginia in the Carolinas and Gulf Coastal states.

- Floodplain forests, mesic to dry upland forests, woodlands, and barrens; also weedy in fencerows and old fields. Most abundant on nutrient-rich alluvial soils and calcareous upland soils, although hardly confined to those substrates. Common throughout except at higher elevations and possibly the se. Coastal Plain.
