- Carex hirsutella is similar to Carex complanata (s.s.), and was widely lumped with it in older Virginia studies. The current map may be somewhat incomplete, although recent field and herbarium studies have largely sorted out these species' in-state distributions. Of the two, Carex hirsutella is most characteristic of drier upland habitats in the mountains and Piedmont, while C. complanata is more characteristic of damp habitats in the Coastal Plain and outer Piedmont.

- In diverse, mesic to dry forests, woodlands, barrens, clearings, and old fields; especially characteristic of and numerous in dry-mesic oak and oak-hickory forests. Frequent to common in the Piedmont and mountains (at low elevations); very infrequent in the Coastal Plain.
