- Comments
- Two varieties - var. gravida and var. lunelliana - have been recognized in the past but are lumped without comment in FNA. Application of these concepts to Virginia material has proven problematic, even to experts who have examined it. FNA considers this primarily Midwestern species native, at least in southwestern VA, where it occurs on soils weathered from limestone and dolostone. Populations in eastern Virginia can be in exceptionally weedy habitats, appear to be spreading, and are assumed to be introductions.
- Habitat
- Fields, pastures, clearings, roadsides, and other damp to dry, open habitats. Infrequent in the mountains; frequent (or becoming so) in the Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain. Likely native only in the Ridge and Valley region, from Scott Co. north to Rockbridge Co.
- Native Status
- Native
