Comments
Primarily a species of the lower Midwest and Gulf states, Carex cherokeensis was discovered at the Radford Arsenal (Pulaski Co.) in 1998 by Wieboldt. See Castanea 69:145 (2004) for an interesting discussion about whether this should be considered a native or introduced population. Subsequently discovered in Scott, Albemarle, and Fairfax counties, the latter two suggesting the species is spreading in our region.
Habitat
Old road bed in woodland at top of bank along the New River in Pulaski County and near Rye Cove in Scott County; possibly native in these areas. Populations in a disturbed floodplain of the Rivanna River in Albemarle County and in Accotink Creek Stream Valley Park in Fairfax County are almost certainly introduced. Rare, mountains and Piedmont.
Native Status
Not Specified
