- Most of our material of this species represents ssp. bromoides. The map may include additional records for ssp. montana, a narrow, Southern Appalachian endemic that reaches its northern limit in sw. Virginia. See map and comments for ssp. montana.
- Habitat
- In the mountains and Piedmont, this sedge mostly occurs in wooded seeps and seepage swamps with base-rich soils and groundwater. In the Coastal Plain, it is associated with seepage swamps influenced by calcareous shell deposits, moderately well-drained bottomlands, and hummocks of alluvial and tidal swamps. Infrequent to locally common throughout; often forms extensive populations of dense tussocks in favorable habitats.
