Comments
Most of our material of this species represents ssp. bromoides. The map may include additional records for ssp. montana, a narrow, Southern Appalachian endemic that reaches its northern limit in sw. Virginia. See map and comments for ssp. montana.
Habitat
In the mountains and Piedmont, this sedge mostly occurs in wooded seeps and seepage swamps with base-rich soils and groundwater. In the Coastal Plain, it is associated with seepage swamps influenced by calcareous shell deposits, moderately well-drained bottomlands, and hummocks of alluvial and tidal swamps. Infrequent to locally common throughout; often forms extensive populations of dense tussocks in favorable habitats.
