- Comments
- Leaves and culms wider and rhizomes shorter than in ssp. bromoides. Subspecies montana is known only from sw. Virginia, w. North Carolina, and nw. South Carolina. This taxon needs further study if we hope to better understand its habitats, ecology, and distribution. Most Virginia specimens of Carex bromoides have not been determined to subspecies. The map shows records cited in Naczi (1990), Contrib. Univ. Mich. Herb. 17:215-222, plus one more recent record.
- Habitat
- Bogs, streambanks, and seeps in high-elevation forests. Infrequent and local in the sw. mountains; all confirmed records are from the Southern Blue Ridge, but the taxon should also be sought in high-elevation areas of the adjacent Ridge and Valley.
- Native Status
- Native
