- Long known as Uvularia pudica (Walt.) Fern. Two varieties are sometimes recognized: var. puberula, with pubescent stems and relatively broad, firm, rounded to clasping leaves, primarily of the mountains and Piedmont; and var. nitida (Britt.) Fern., with glabrous stems and narrower, thin, cuneate leaves, in our area confined to the Coastal Plain. The geographic split between these vars. in Virginia is evident on the distribution map, with a "gap" between var. puberula in the mountains and inner Piedmont, and var. nitida in the se. Coastal Plain. These are not formally recognized by many taxonomists, but seem fairly distinctive in our area and worthy of further study.
- Habitat
- Mesic to dry, acidic forests, pine-oak/heath woodlands, and clearings. Common in the mountains; infrequent to rare in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain.
