- In addition to the typical plants with maroon-red flowers, forms with white, yellowish-cream, and pinkish flowers occasionally occur.

- Rich or, occasionally, acidic cove forests; mesic and dry-mesic slope forests over mafic or calcareous substrates; northern hardwood forests, seepage swamp hummocks. Widespread but varying from infrequent to frequent in the mountains and far sw. Piedmont.
