- The map may include a few records for var. compositus Harper in the Coastal Plain, but is representative of the distribution of var. scirpoides. Even the limited number of herbarium specimens identified to variety make clear that var. scirpoides is widely distributed in the eastern two-thirds of the state and completely sympatric with var. compositus in the Coastal Plain.

- In various wet, open habitats, including bogs, seeps, wet meadows, interdune swales, and ditches. Frequent to locally common in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont, and infrequent in the n. mountains.
