- Nonflowering plants can be confused with Medeola virginiana; the latter has a wiry, solid stem that is floccose at least at the base, compared with the hollow, smooth, usually purplish stem of Isotria verticillata.
- Habitat
- Acidic soils of mesic to dry forests and woodlands, most common in oak/heath forests and pine-oak/heath woodlands. Infrequent throughout.
