- Comments
- Virginia material has been labeled as both Eleocharis palustris and E. smallii Britt., sometimes from the same station. Whether or not two entities are distinct at some taxonomic level is unclear. Treatment here follows the FNA circumscription of E. palustris as a highly variable, circumboreal species with some geographically correlated variation that may warrant formal recognition; E. smallii is considered a "variant" in this treatment.
- Habitat
- Freshwater (rarely oligohaline) tidal marshes and shores, rocky and gravelly river shores and bars, depression ponds, and impoundments. Infrequent in the mountains and n. Coastal Plain; rare in the Piedmont; may be numerous where found.
