- Usually distinguished from other Calamagrostis taxa by its dry habitat, where it typically occurs in large, sterile patches, rarely sending up flowering culms. Patches often flower profusely following fire and other canopy-opening disturbances. The glaucous upper leaf surface facilitates identification. - Dry-mesic to dry montane forests, most characteristic of gentle upper slopes and ridge crests under open oak, oak-hickory, or northern red oak stands. Common in the mountains, often forming extensive colonies; rare in the Piedmont.
