- Incompletely mapped at present due to confusion between and lumping of vars. of Carex albicans in past Virginia studies. This appears to be the characteristic var. in much of the Coastal Plain, extending less frequently into the Piedmont. See Comments under Carex albicans var. albicans, to which Carex emmonsii is very similar. The two taxa differ in several subtle and confluent characters of the inflorescence, as well as habit. Whereas C. albicans var. albicans has prominent, erect culms usually well exceeding the leaves, the culms of C. emmonsii are short and recurved, often hidden among or beneath the leaves. However, this character is not always well correlated with other supposedly identiying characters of the staminate scales and perigynium teeth.
- Habitat
- Mesic upland forests, wet flatwoods, depression swamps and ponds, seasonally moist sandhill woodlands, and maritime forests. The full range and distribution of this taxon are not completely known. Field and herbarium experience indicates that this var. is frequent to locally common in the Coastal Plain, with scattered populations in the Piedmont and mountains.
