- Many of our plants have cleistogamous flowers. The chasmogamous form has been called var. pringlei (Greenm.) Freudenstein (Harvard Papers in Botany, 1997). However, it does not seem to breed true and so is better recognized as a form. See Flora of the Southeastern U.S. for a detailed discussion.
