- Dry, usually rocky, open woodlands, barrens, and outcrops on mafic and calcareous rocks of the mountains and inner Piedmont; dry clearings and roadsides on varied soils in the outer Piedmont and Coastal Plain; occasionally in dry to even wet interdune swales of the outer Coastal Plain. Infrequent to locally common in the Piedmont; infrequent and confined to woodlands and barrens in the mountains; rare in the Coastal Plain.
