- Comments
- A highly variable species; extensive field and herbarium work will be required to fully document the distributions of several named varieties and to understand their ecology. In addition to this species map, partial maps for var. ciliatifolium, var. muhlenbergii, and var. setaceum are provided based on specimens so labelled or annotated at VPI and other herbaria. Two additional vars. have been reported on the basis of single specimens collected in the 1930's: var. supinum (Fernald 5192 at MO, Northampton Co.) and var. psammophilum (K. Carr s.n. at MDKY, Norfolk). These are not mapped pending re-examination and verification of these specimens.

- Dry to, less often, mesic habitats, including woodlands, clearings, interdune swales, rock outcrops, meadows, fields, and roadsides. Frequent to common in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont; infrequent in the mountains.
