A molecular phylogeny of Panicum (AJB 90:796-821 (2003)) supports the segregation of Phanopyrum from Panicum. - Habitat
- Shallow water and sloughs of Nyssa aquatica-dominated swamps. Rare, inner Coastal Plain of se. Virginia; known only from the bottomland of Three Creek east of Emporia (Greensville and Sussex cos.), where locally common.
