This ubiquitous, often weedy Tridens is easily recognized by its exserted, diffuse, late-summer panicles that have a greasy feel and are usually deep reddish purple. See map and Comments for the similar (but much rarer) Tridens chapmanii for key differences.
Habitat
Fields, pastures, roadsides, clearings, and other open, disturbed habitats; also scattered in varied natural woodlands and barrens. Common throughout.
