- This is the northernmost var. of the species, extending north to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan in the ne. U.S. Although the exact pre-Columbian range is obscure due to the species' weedy nature, it is considered a likely native in Virginia.

- Fields, roadsides, floodplain clearings, and other open, disturbed habitats. Frequent in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont; rare in the mountains.
