- MacMillan (2003, Castanea 68: 345-347) suggests that Eryngium aquaticum L. var. ravenelii (A.Gray) Mathias & Constance of calcareous wet savannas in SC, GA, and FL warrants species status. While this sounds plausible and is followed by Flora of the Southeastern U.S., contemporary studies supporting the rank change are lacking.
