- Freshwater tidal marshes in the Coastal Plain; riverside gravel bars in the mountains. Rare in the n. and c. Coastal Plain; known from intertidal zones on the Potomac, Rappahannock, and James rivers; disjunct to the New River in the sw. mountains (Giles County).
