- Cove forests, mesic montane oak and oak-hickory forests, seepage swamp hummocks, shell-marl ravine forests in the Coastal Plain; more tolerant of varied soil chemistries in the mountains than eastward, where it is restricted to rich, mafic and calcareous substrates. Common in the mountains; rare in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain.
